Workshop Sessions
1. Balanced Literacy includes Computer
Literacy
Mark Rinaldi-Ross
Greater Essex County District Board
Modeled Reading/Writing, Shared Reading/Writing, Interactive Reading/Writing, and
Guided Reading/Writing are all-important cornerstones in a truly Balanced Literacy
program. Balance occurs when all components are addressed and contribute toward a
childs growth and development.
In this session, the role of computer technology in the process is examined along with
examples of what it looks like and where it fits (and where it doesnt fit). The
focus will be on software licensed under the OESS program so that participants can
critically analyze their own programs and return with ideas that can be implemented
immediately. In this session, Mark will deal specifically with how it all came together at
Frank Begley school in Windsor.
2. iMovie + Kids
Victor Chan: Apple Computers
The use of digital video and still photography can enhance student learning by adding a
unique multimedia dimension to their learning. Students are now expected to use multimedia
to enhance learning and meet expectations in all subject areas. As a result teachers are
now required to learn software which can fulfill these needs in their classrooms. This
workshop will introduce participants to the digital video medium using iMovie and the
Apple iBook. With iMovie, teachers will be able to assist students in examining multimedia
effects and presentations for a variety of purposes.
The sights, sounds and interactive media that engages and motivates todays digital
generation are often missing from the classroom. Digital media can truly enhance learning
and can make that learning fun, providing a more compelling and effective learning
environment for todays students.
3. Intrusion and Virus Detection
BlueDefender
Intrusion detection involves setting up a capability to identify intrusions and other
types of attacks. Intrusion detection offers a wealth of benefits to organizations that
deploy it, but success is anything but guaranteed. This presentation covers the "in's
and out's" of intrusion detection, starting from what it is to dealing with inherent
limitations in intrusion detection. It covers not only the basics of intrusion detection,
but also mistakes that are frequently made and ways to avoid them. The goal is to enable
attendees to not only understand the basic issues involved in intrusion and virus
detection, but also to be able to participate in decisions about intrusion detection
deployment and evaluate the effectiveness of such a deployment
4. Integrating Technology and Curriculum
Gord McKye
Gord McKye is a former Superintendent of Schools for Etobicoke Board of Education. His
extensive experience with technology and curriculum has given him insights into making
technology a truly effective learning tool.
5. Internet Safety / ePals
Daryn Bee, Ann Marie Verlaan
Thames Valley District School Board, London Catholic District School Board
Communications Technology has connected classrooms to the largest network in the world
- The Internet. Rich media resources and email correspondence transform the traditional
classroom into a rich, dynamic and engaging learning environment. This unprecedented
sharing of media and immediacy of communication comes at a cost. Anyone can share
anything! Anyone can pretend to be anyone they like as they communicate with kids.
Internet safety is a concern for all educators and parents. This workshop will review the
technologies of email, chat and online searching as well as strategies that can be used to
keep children safe. Best practices and policies from school boards across Ontario shall be
explored and shared.
6. eTeacher Planning, Assessing, Reporting with Mobility
Leslie Atkinson, Alison Slack
Thames Valley District School Board
eTeacher is more than a report card generator. The presenter will demonstrate the
reporting, planning, and assessment components of the software, including how it
interfaces with the Ontario Curriculum Unit Planner. Learn how rubrics are created and
linked to units and transferred to handheld computers for easy, mobile student assessment
by teachers. Data can also be created and moved to a palm to allow teachers greater
flexibility in gathering student assessment data.
7. Introductory Palm
Mike Newnham
Thames Valley District School Board
The presenter will demonstrate the basic operations of the PalmOS Organizer including
tips, hints
and beaming possibilities. Bring your Palm and put it to work for you.
8. Maximizing Computers in the Classroom and the Lab
Alison Slack, Leslie Atkinson
Thames Valley District School Board
Discover organizational strategies and lesson plans that will help to make the most of
computer lab time and those pesky one or two computers in the classroom.
9. The Operating-System Problem
David Pogue
New York Times Columnist
2001 was the year of the operating system, as both Apple and Microsoft unveiled
dramatically different new versions of their system software. Apple's Mac OS X and
Microsoft's Windows XP are both designed to solve one problem above all: computer
instability. But both companies faced many other challenges along the way, from creating
Internet ties to manipulating digital photos--but went about solving them with radically
different philosophies.
Having authored best selling books on both operating system, David Pogue has witnessed
firsthand both the brilliant breakthroughs and the misguided failures both companies came
up with. In this fascinating tour, you'll discover out how much easier to use a computer
can be, once you realize what its creators were trying to accomplish.
10. Distance Learning
Todd Hitchcock, Leo Plue, Laura Elliott
Durham District School Board

delivering online courses to staff and students within the Durham region. This session

develop and deliver high quality curriculum in and online environment.
